What is Business Transcription?
Business Transcription is a lot harder than other forms of audio transcription, like podcast transcription, which are usually extremely clean and clear digital quality audio files. Sermon Transcription, which again is a recording done with little amount of background noise, and or interview transcription, where the audio is generally recorded on a hand-held recorder in a quiet room. The audio for business transcription more than often is not very clear, since it’s recorded via a telephone off a conference. So, this makes the task doubly challenging.
The term Business Transcription applies to turning audio into text for big multinational companies. These are usually their earnings results transcripts for the quarter or the launch of a new product or service.
So, there usually is a conference call every three months, in the form of either a webcast, or just a simple call, where you can call and be part of the conference. That way this goes is, there’s first a session of reporting of the last quarter by usually the President, CEO, CFO or the Investor Relations Officer.
This is then followed by a session of questions and answers. The questions are more commonly asked by top analysts from big banks or financial institutions, and or by shareholders or financial journalists. Usually, the company would have to be a very big one and a very famous one for a lot of analysts to get on the call or webcast.
Big companies that have their stocks registered at the stock market, have to submit periodical financial reports towards their shareholders, to show how their money was spent, what were the profits and losses in that quarter, launches of new products or services etc.
Turning these audio files into text is one hard nut to crack. You have to do homework on the company before you begin transcribing their call. Nothing very technical, just to skim through their website, look at what they did in the last three months, key executive names, key product names, because all of this would go into delivering a highly professional and accurate transcript.
Business Transcription usually takes more time to get used to AND do in a proper way than something simpler like podcast transcription or sermon transcription. I’d say it would take a newbie transcriber, close to around 2 years of constant daily work as a business transcriber, to completely get the hang of it, and then to deliver proper transcripts, which require minimal proofreading.
