What is Audio Transcription?
Well, to put it in simple layman terms, it means turning audio to text. But you’ll be mistaken if you think it’s that easy. Before I started transcription or became a full time transcriber/proofreader, I used to think, “Oh what the hell, it’s gonna be as easy as listening to words, and just typing them as you hear.”
Well, as it turns out, it requires a certain amount of skill, and not everybody can do this in an accurate and super fast manner, something which is almost an untold requirement these days. You need to have a VERY good ear for this, because even if you miss one word here or one word there, your accuracy percentage goes dramatically down, added to that, you have to be extremely quick too. So, the task becomes doubly harder.
Did you know that to transcribe a one hour audio file, it takes close to 8 work hours? Yes, it’s that difficult. Because not only do you have to constantly play and pause it, you also have to rewind back and forth to understand certain words or phrases, especially if they are of a difficult accent.
Secondly, you need to have a solid base of general knowledge. If you don’t know much about what’s going on in the world, current affairs, modern technical terms related to technology etc., chances are you won’t be extremely good at transcription.
Then comes the most important aspect of this, and that is the research. About 90% of the transcript accuracy depends upon a good ear and how well you can research for difficult terms. You might come across some technical terms for which you may find no reference on the web at all, and at these times you might even have to refer to certain encyclopedias or books related to that topic.
At their best, a newbie can manage to transcribe close to 5 minutes of audio per hour. More experienced transcribers can manage 10 minutes per hour, without mistakes, and the pros can do it at 20 minutes per hour. But to reach that kind of level, you need to be able to type at, at least 75 words per minute.
ScriptoSphere understands these complexities, and that’s why we make sure that our transcribers and proofreaders are university graduates in English.
Our transcription process goes through three phases: Transcription, Proofreading and then Finalizing. The audio file is first transcribed by our experienced transcribers, then only our most experienced proofreaders give it a thorough check to remove and correct any inaccuracies. Then our senior proofreader checks the file again for the inaudible timestamps put there by the proofreader, thus resulting in the most accurate, top quality transcript.
And at $0.90 per minute of audio for clean and clear digital quality files, we are also one of the most affordable transcription companies on the web. Visit our website: http://www.scriptosphere.com today to get all the information or to just upload a file and get a quote!
