Q. If I recorded an interview with a person who was, let’s say, unsure or unable to clear his thoughts and changed his mind as he spoke, would the transcript that I get from ScriptoSphere contain all the sounds he uttered, as in “umm, oh, you know, ah”, interjections or even maybe his cough?
A. There are three types of audio transcripts, according to the degree of accuracy in typing all the audible sounds or half sentences. We at ScriptoSphere can provide, at the client’s request, a transcript containing ALL the sounds in the audio recording, and this particular style is known as “verbatim transcription“. Although this style is not generally employed, as usually the unimportant utterances don’t provide any additional information on the subject in the recorded audio audio file. Although, we should mention the exceptions, like for example in legal transcription, in a witness deposition, or any other type of declaration where a hesitation or a change of phrase could be meaningful.
The semi-verbatim style of transcription excludes only the interjections or repeated words, if they are uttered more than 3 times. This results in a more easy readable text.
The third type would be the clean, edited version, (which is the default style employed by ScriptoSphere, if the client doesn’t specify whether they want verbatim transcription or not), where the transcriber will cut out all interjections and meaningless utterances, and complete the unfinished sentences to clean up the clutter. ScriptoSphere will also correct the grammatical mistakes in order to obtain an accurate and clean transcript, ready to be published. This requires longer time and a certain amount of skill and skill from the audio transcription team.
