Audio transcription as a profession

Important info for people looking to pursue audio transcription as a career

I guess we’re the right people to pass on the info at least on this topic, seeing as how we’ve spent a good part of the last decade transcribing and proofreading plenty of interviews, conferences, seminars, sermons, podcasts, radio shows, videos etc. etc.  So, the question really is, how good is a career in the field of audio transcription?  To be honest, compared to more higher paying professional careers, not that good, but then again it depends on what you’re really looking for.  While to be an transcriber, you don’t need any special training or to finish any specialized course, you do need to have solid command over the English language, that is a must, and obviously graduates in English are preferred by any and all transcription services.

While it’s not a very lifestyle intrusive job, especially if you’re an at-home transcriber, it’s painstaking nonetheless.  You can make decent money working from home if you’re hired by a professional transcription company or if you’re freelancing from home.  The job of converting audio to text is pretty straightforward, but wait, there’s more to it than that.  Listening is paramount, and so are solid grammar skills and extensive vocabulary.  You can’t excel in this field with just basic knowledge of English, or just being able to speak it proper.  It needs much more concentration and hard work if you want to keep making money in this field for a long time to come.
